CHS Club Baseball Seeking Support

by Robert Jump

When the bank statement says the account holds $46 and you have a bill for umpire fees of $1,000 costs are adding up quickly, and that’s just the beginning for Coquille High School club sports such as baseball.

“This classification means that the majority of the money needed to play has to be raised,” Coach Mark Dannels told Coquille Community News. “It means we’re a non-funded sport. We’re in dire straits for some funding.”

The team has already received some community support. Gederos Construction has worked on the dugouts at Fortier Field and Jack Hiatt, former catcher and player development director for the San Francisco Giants, donated uniforms for the team.

“It’s a whole new program this year,” Dannels, who took over as head coach this year said. “We have six dedicated, experienced coaches and 16 young adults that want to play baseball and we need the community’s support.”

Athletics programs are something Dannels believes in and much of his off duty time since becoming Coquille’s chief of police has been spent coaching, promoting and fundraising for after school sports.

“It’s something that really benefits our young people and our community as a whole,” he said. “It’s another way of instilling values and having some fun.”

While the team needs funding for equipment, accessories and facilities maintenance, Dannels is also aware of the current economy.

“We’re reaching out to the community,” he said. “We know it’s a hard time with the economic challenges out there, but for these young adults who are dedicated enough that they’re even coming out in the rain to play the game of baseball we need to help them out.”

Those interested in donating to the team may do so at Coquille High School. Please make checks payable to Coquille High School Baseball Team.

Take Care Posting Real Estate Online

Individuals need to be cautious when posting rental properties and real estate on-line.

The Internet Crime Complaint Center continues to receive numerous complaints from individuals who have fallen victim to scams involving rentals of apartments and houses, as well as postings of real estate on-line.

Rental scams occur when the victim has rental property advertised and is contacted by an interested party. Once the rental price is agreed-upon, the scammer forwards a check for the deposit on the rental property to the victim.
