Food stamps now SNAP

Monday, February 1, 2010

In January, Oregon officially changed the name of its federal food stamp program to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program. Oregon joins 26 other states making this change to emphasize that nutritious and healthy foods are within reach of low-income households.

The Food Stamp program began in the 1960s under President Kennedy. The use of food stamp coupons in Oregon and other states was replaced long ago with debit-like cards. In fact, food stamp coupons are now part of the collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
